So you're fed up running applications that cost money to register, 30 day demos that expire sooner rather than later? This would be the place to come then as I'll list all the best freeware for Microsoft Windows.

    <b>Document Management</b>
    <i>TED Notepad</i>
    Downloads - http://jsimlo.sk/notepad/download.php
    Screenshots - http://jsimlo.sk/notepad/shots.php

Simply the best 'plain text' editor available. This will act as a replacement for the built-in notepad or a stand-alone application. It features a variety of options and for the most part can do almost anything you want. There are others of course but this remains the best to date.

For those more risky ventures you can increase your PC's video performance by installing these tweaked versions of their driver packages. nVidia, ATI are both featured, while each group does things differently I prefer the Xtreme-G drivers.

    NGOHQ - http://www.ngohq.com/
    Xtreme-G - http://www.tweakforce.com/
    Z-Tweaked - http://forums.thezproject.org/

    <b>File Management</b>

For anyone seeking to ignore those pricey decompression / compression apps like WinZip or WinRAR then these 2 are by far the best you can find.

    Entering the arena

    IZArc - http://www.izarc.org/
    TUGZip - http://www.tugzip.com/

While I prefer TUGZip the sheer number of file types supported in IZArc makes it the one for me

Of lesser importance but perhaps a neccesaity, the ever hidden yet popular THE Rename! http://www.herve-thouzard.com/

This app lets you rename files a variety of ways, infact it's so useful I could almost write a page on it. Needless to say you can convert an entire directory to lowercase, uppercase, etc. Helpful for those pesky mp3 collections that are messing with your eyes.

This next site is general in nature but offers alot

    http://www.paehl.de/home.htm

Basically he's bored so wrote a while bunch of applications that are gaining momentum in the freeware industry. Take a look and maybe you'll see something helpful.

Are you into instant messanging? Take a look at AIM Lite - http://x.aim.com/laim/ which really works well and makes you wonder why you installed AIM. Still haven't found a way to disable transcripts though!!

This little program is one i love, all it will do is sync your PC to an atomic clock server somewhere, it is however the best one you'll find

Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!

    http://www.worldtimeserver.com/atomic-clock/

If you want to increase your internet speed then head on over to CableNut - http://www.cablenut.com/ which is basically the best all-in-one tweaker for your internet connection. Of course you'll have to read abit but it'll be worth it in the end!

Into using Bit Torrent for things? Use nothing but http://www.utorrent.com/

For your multimedia needs such as burning cds we have a few applications to show you today, namely

    http://www.burnatonce.net/

It's very good and I like the fact it's free

This is more impressive http://cdrtfe.sourceforge.net/ in my opinion although both have value.

If you don't know already this is the best burner available (and it's free!) http://www.imgburn.com/

Then we have the easier to use but more annoying in design http://www.cdburnerxp.se/

Now here's one thing that isn't free but if you own it why not go with style instead of bloat!

    http://www.updatepack.nl/

Now I've covered alot, and believe me I would love to write more but since so many things are here I am lazy. See I'm Mr. niceguy and treated badly but I give these ideas to you because I am loving and kind.

If you're ripping music to your computer from CD's then use nothing else except http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/ which is touted as the most respected and free ripper available woOt

For your audio playing needs you could use a bloated codec pack, but why bother when http://www.foobar2000.org/ is available, light on resources, and has basically the best style around. Did I mention it'll play most anything?

Speaking of playing anything did you know you don't need to buy DivX or anything at all in order to get playback of basically any video you want? Just use http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ and you'll learn soon enough the wonders of it.

For those graphics files you can't seem to open, well, there's http://www.irfanview.com/ which supports just about every file type imaginable.

Need help with sorting your music collection? Checkout http://www.mp3tag.de/en/ which is again free and does anything you could ever need to your music files!

This next app is the same but offers more of a kick, although it seems to still be abit buggy IMO http://users.forthnet.gr/the/jtclipper/

For those seeking to draw on their PC's why not try http://www.getpaint.net/ which is totally free and kicks butt!

    I'll add more later

    http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/

Don't forget Open Office! Free office suite, http://www.openoffice.org/

For a free substitute for Winzip/Rar, I've always used 7zip, http://www.7-zip.org/ I don't know how it stacks up against Dark's offerings above, but it has always worked well for me.

Want to know how fast your CPU is, memory speed, number of memory slots? You need CPUz, http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

Want to know if there is a newer firmware for your DVD player/burner, or maybe a region free firmware? You need Discinfo, http://hijacker.rpc1.com/discinfo/

    Beaten on CPUz.

Finally, anyone using XP can theme it differently using pre-made styles. First you'll need to download and run this http://www.windowsxlive.net/?p=604

Then go get the themes everyones talking about

    http://oddbasket.deviantart.com/art/Royale-Remixed-44294818
    http://fazedreality.deviantart.com/art/Zune-Final-70644390

and don't forget little Neko http://www.geocities.com/siliconvalley/haven/4173/neko.html

Note: By default uxtheme.dll will not allow third-party msstyles to be use in XP, that can be overcome by using the hacked ones available online. That first link above is to the patcher that will do it for you, then all you gotta do is install the themes.

Can't afford an anti virus program? AVG has a free one that is very effective, http://free.grisoft.com/ I recommend upgrading to the pay version, but my mother has been using just the free version trouble free for quite some time now.

Windows Defender is a free MS program to help keep your XP machine free of spyware. If you are already infested, you will probably need more than just this, but it does catch a fair amount of junk. http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Spybot Search and Destroy is another free anti spyware program. As I mentioned before, if you are already infested, you'll probably need more than one program. They accept donations, so why not thank them for providing this program, and help towards future development, by sending them a few dollars? http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

I like to listen to music on my computer. I use foobar 2000 for doing so, http://www.foobar2000.org/

Darkside linked to EAC for ripping music to your computer. It has the reputation for being the best. I tried it, and ran into some annoying problems, so I went back to CDEX, http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/?q=download

I tried AVG and Avast! but neither did it for me, they slowed my boot time considerably + anything else I would do. Instead I got Avira AntiVir http://www.free-av.com/ and it's very easy to use + won't burden your PC.

May I make a couple of recommendations:
(none of these involve filthy background applications, i.e. icons in the system tray etc)

    • Emacs - Programmers choice of text editor. Takes a while to learn, but if your job is programming you'll depend upon it - supports all hardware languages used in industry, SystemVerilog, VHDL, etc and can format them brilliantly. Most text editors depend too much on the mouse, which will slow you right down, e.g. notepad.exe, nedit.
    • Unicode keyboard driver - Available for UK and US keyboard layouts - allows typing of very useful characters without having to know codes. I simply can't recommend this enough.
    • PGP - Superb encryption technique (ok, so this one has a systray icon - but it can be disabled, as can the service when not needed).
